Welcome to Vietnam, Mr. President. – by Ray McGovern

I was wrong. I had been saying that it would be naïve to take too seriously presidential candidate Barack Obama’s rhetoric regarding the need to escalate the war in Afghanistan. I kept thinking to myself that when he got briefed on the history of Afghanistan and the oft-proven ability of Afghan “militants” to drive out foreign invaders – from Alexander the Great to the Persians, the Mongolians, the Indians, the British, and the Russians – he would be sure to understand why they call mountainous Afghanistan the “graveyard of empires.”
And surely he would be fully briefed on the stupidity and deceit that left 58,000 U.S. troops – not to mention 2 to 3 million Vietnamese – dead in Vietnam. John Kennedy became president the year Obama was born. One cannot expect toddler-to-teenager Barack to remember much about the war in Vietnam, and it was probably too early for that searing, controversial experience to have found its way into the history texts as he was growing up.

In the Sixties he served as an infantry/intelligence officer and then became a CIA analyst for the next 27 years. He is on the Steering Group of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS).’
He was also my wife’s teacher in Washington DC.

Obama’s National Service Plan – Is Religious Activity Forbidden?

How would you feel if, in order to obtain federal loans for college, you had to do national service?
Maybe not too bad, eh?
How would you feel if, in order to obtain federal loans for college, you had to do national service AND were prohibited from engaging in anything religious (including attending church).
I suspect this idea sounds like an outrage to many reading this article. It does to me.
I heard rumors that Obama’s plan (HR 1388) to require national service in order to receive federal student loans, included a ban on religious activity. I had a hard time believing this was true. However, upon further investigation, it appears that House Resolution 1388 includes this ban on religious activity!
The language is rather vague about whether this ban includes only the national service activities, or any religious activity. One thing is certain if you wanted to do your National Service through a religious organization such as MCC or World Vision, you are out of luck.
Whether this ’service’ will be mandatory or not is still up in the air. Compulsory volunteering, what a great concept!
Here’s a look at the section of the bill that explains this.
SEC. 125. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES AND INELIGIBLE ORGANIZATIONS.
‘(a) Prohibited Activities- A participant in an approved national service position under this subtitle may not engage in the following activities:
‘(1) Attempting to influence legislation.
‘(2) Organizing or engaging in protests, petitions, boycotts, or strikes.
‘(3) Assisting, promoting, or deterring union organizing.
‘(4) Impairing existing contracts for services or collective bargaining agreements.
‘(5) Engaging in partisan political activities, or other activities designed to influence the outcome of an election to any public office.
‘(6) Participating in, or endorsing, events or activities that are likely to include advocacy for or against political parties, political platforms, political candidates, proposed legislation, or elected officials.
‘(7) Engaging in religious instruction, conducting worship services, providing instruction as part of a program that includes mandatory religious instruction or worship, constructing or operating facilities devoted to religious instruction or worship, maintaining facilities primarily or inherently devoted to religious instruction or worship, or engaging in any form of religious proselytization.
This bill has already passed the House of Representatives. If you are upset by this bill, and you should be, please spread the word and contact your representatives in the Senate.

Should Christians Endorse Torture?

I think not. How can we love our enemies by torturing them? The really sad thing for me is that many Christians have accepted torture because they felt the need to support their choice for president: George W. Bush. This is a shame. Just like it is shameful for a Christian to vote for Obama and begin to support abortion because they feel the need to continue to defend their choice for president.
We need to get rid of our pride. How do I know this? I had to get rid of my pride to take another look at my vote for George W. Bush and it wasn’t until I did that that I realized how deceived I had been. Perhaps I will write more about why I can’t support George W. Bush and should have never done so in the first place. It is also important to seek out the truth. If you do not have a proper understanding of the policies of your candidate then how can you vote for them? This is about as ludicrous as voting for the 10,000 page 789,000,000,000 dollar bailout without ever reading it; and this is exactly what I did when I voted for Bush. I am sad to see that many people made the same mistake with Obama.
We should not change our beliefs based upon identifying with a political group. This is the danger in supporting a candidate at all costs (even Ron Paul). No political group or personality should have our full allegiance, this should only be reserved for our Lord and Savior Jesus.
Everything that enters our life as Christians should be under the authority of Jesus, and the Word of God. If it isn’t it will, eventually, overtake our allegiance to Christ.
Check out this article on why Christianity and Torture aren’t compatible. I’d love to hear what you think.
